House Cats

Cohabitation

One example of how house cats are "naturally" meant to behave is to observe feral domestic cats, which are social enough to form colonies. Each cat in a colony holds a distinct territory, with sexually active males having the largest territories, and neutered cats having the smallest. Between these territories are "neutral" areas where cats watch and greet one another without territorial conflicts. Outside these neutral areas, territory holders usually aggressively chase away stranger cats, at first by staring, hissing, and growling, and if that does not work, by short but noisy and violent attacks.

Despite cohabitation in colonies, cats do not have a social survival strategy, or a "pack mentality". This mainly means that an individual cat takes care of all basic needs on its own (e.g., finding food, and defending itself), and thus cats are always lone hunters; they do not hunt in groups as dogs or lions do. (It is no coincidence that cats are "clean" animals; the chemistry of their saliva, expended during their frequent grooming, appears to be a natural deodorant. If so, the function of this cleanliness is to decrease the chance a prey animal will notice the cat's presence in time. In contrast, dog's odor is an advantage in hunting, for a dog is a pack hunter; part of the pack stations itself upwind, and its odor drives prey towards the rest of the pack stationed downwind. This requires a cooperative effort, which in turn requires communications skills. No such communications skills are required of a lone hunter.)

Can anyone tell me why house cats have a diamond shaped iris? (Answers: 4) (Comments: 0)
I asked this before but my subconcious will not allow the answers I received. I was told cats iris are shaped like this because they hunt at night. However, large cats do not display this. They have a round shaped iris--lion/tiger/leopard/ etc...I also have noted a large amount of other nocturnal creatures who do not share this physical trait. The next creatures I have thought of would be the lizard family as they have this diamond shape of an iris. But lizards are day creatures because they are cold blooded and require day light to aid their metabolism. So then where does this biological difference originate. If house cats and lions are related where on the tree of life did this difference come from.

How do you get house cats to stop fighting? (Answers: 5) (Comments: 0)
I have a 7 yr. old spaid female cat . About 6 months ago we got a 8 month old nutered male cat. Both cats are in and out side cats. At night they are both in. The male beats up the female all the time. He stauks her out side and jumps on her and hair goes flying. I seperate them in 2 different parts of the house when they are both home. Is there any way I can get the male cat to leave the female alone out side of getting rid of him? I really like him other wise. He is a bully ALL the time with the female. She can not walk, sit or stand with out him jumping on her and scratching and biting her. She runs from him and will not come home if he is waiting for her out side. He keeps her off our property. Any suggestions would be greatly appreacheated. Thanks in advance. I bring the male in so the female will come home. I am always bringing in a cat in the front door and going to the other door to get the other one. LOL Thanks for all your answeres
