My Cat just froze.....what's happening?

I was playing with my cat last night and rubbing her stomach, she was playing back with me and moving around and stuff. All of a sudden she just stopped moving. Her eyes went still, everything stopped, but she was still breathing. I told mom because I was worried something was really wrong, and she said I shouldn't worry about it. But I am. She was just into the vet yesterday and diagnosed with diabetes. I'm in the process of begging my dad to pay for her treatment, at the moment the only treatment she's getting is precription diabetic cat food. And I'm even trying to get a job to pay the huge initial cost of starting her up on insulin and everything she needs to be cared for. I'm still trying to get dad to pay it and then let me pay him back though. Mom said whatever happened has nothing to do with her diabetes. The doctor said her kidneys look great from her test. So it's not like her body is badly worn right now. But what happened? I nudged her even and she still didn't snap out of it. I waited a little while watching then tapped the floor and she sorta snapped out of it. Her eyes were wide open....What happened to my cat?

I had a diabetic cat and she lived for 7 years with the disease. It was very difficult to manage, but we did the best we could. Sometimes she would space out like you describe. Maybe it is a seizure like others have mentioned, however, I think it might be low blood sugar. Our vet told us to keep Karo Syrup on hand in the event she became hypoglycemic. Signs we were to watch for included lethargy and "catatonic" behaviors. I disagree with your mother. I feel it is related to her diabetes. Kidney function can be fine while a cat has diabetes. Should her glucose levels remain dangerously high for too long, that is when ketones will spill over into the urine and that leads to a whole new mess of problems. I'm not a vet, I just have a lot of experience with feline diabetes. My advice to you is to take her once a week or once every two weeks and have her glucose levels checked. My vet only charged for the test. Insulin is the best way to control the disease. Always have plenty of water available. When her glucose levels are high she will drink a lot of water. When the levels are low...she will be lazy and stare off into space and may even be cold to the touch. That is your red flag to RUN to the vet or vet ER. Keep positive. My cat had a glucose level of 31 and still survived!! Cats are resilient. It takes lots of love and patience, but you and your cat can handle this. Good Luck.

It could have been a seizure. Sometimes people (yes I realize this is a cat) are having seizures when they are just staring off into space. When they come back, THEY don't even realize they had a seizure, they just think their mind wondered.

Sooo... I would say a seizure, but I'm not a vet or a doctor.

check http://www.petmd.com and see if they have any info that could help.

Sounds like a seizure. Also i had a dog who used to do that he would get excited and fall over and he wouldnt move, after about a minute or two he was fine. The doctor said anxiety, yes pets can get anxiety too.

I know a cat owner and her cat died a year ago,I think, because of diabetes. She spent thousands of dollar for the cat's treatment and all. Well just wanted to share that, not trying to scare you. Please don't think that I am.

Well, hmm that is quite unusual for a cat to just suddenly freeze and stay frozen while playing with the owner. I had a cat and she usually froze when she wanted to catch something; and had to be subtle. There are some sicknesses, even in humans, where the muscle idles and stays frozen. OH nevermind that, you do know that when goats feel 'threatened' or when they are scared, they literally freeze and their muscles just idle. I dont know if that might be related to what happened to your cat, but that is quite interesting. Don't be so worried, and don't stress yourself, hope that it is NOTHING serious.

wow you are such a sweetheart and that had to scare you to death....I do have seizures from a car accident a few years back i had blunt force trauma to my head and, i'm on proper meds now and haven't had one, but i'm no vet either but i'm pretty sure she would have been flopping around, i'm a certified medical assistant and a lot of people have seen me have a seizure and I have seen a lot and not once have I ever seen someone stare like that....I mean I can't imagine cats would be that different I mean a seizure by definition is a short socket of some kind in our brain...it almost sounds as if she was slipping into a diabetic coma, that's what happens to my sons friend ,,,of course this is all just from my experience, but my poor little kitten the other day was playing under my feet at my desk, and not the desk with my laptop and printer another one that i just do bills etc at and all of a sudden she was flipping and like yelping she's too young to meow ya know how they just open there little mouths and do the act, lol but anyways she totally freaked out and it was like she got electrocuted ...but I checked and checked there was nothing there, it was the strangest thing I've ever seen it was like there was a ghost back there lol,,,i'm sorry your cat has diabetes, don't feel bad I just found out mine is stressed out because i'm so stressed out and is probably going to need xanax and prozac I just had a loss in the family and have been crying a lot just very emotional and haven't played with her kinda just isolated myself (not on purpose) but she's been acting out by farting all the time especially when I get near her, and I've sprayed her quite a bit lately just because I haven't had patients, I would never hurt her but ya know there weird little creatures...
maybe you can get a vet to help you out or something,,,I'm so sorry,,,start a website maybe people will send you donations....you will be in my prayers, pray I don't know if your a Christian but sometimes God works in mysterious ways good luck, sweetheart, your a really good person, most people probably would have gotten rid of the cat and just got another one, thanks from all of us cat lovers for staying by her, bless you.....
